We Own the Night (2007)

We Own the Night (2007) is a classic example of the 188 stage Hero’s Journey (also known as the Monomyth).

This story is similar in many ways to The Godfather (1972), in which Don Corleone hopes that his son will join in the fold; in this story, Robert Duvall / Deputy Chief Albert 'Bert' Grusinsky hopes that his son will follow the right road and become a police officer.

Briefly:

Joaquin Phoenix / Robert 'Bobby' Green is found in his Ordinary World as manager of the Nightclub and representing his Ordinary World and Ordinary Self is his Russian “father,” Marat Buzhayev. Also representative of his Ordinary World and Ordinary Self is Eva Mendes, his girlfriend.

The warning of the push out of the Ordinary World and Ordinary Self comes form his brother and father in the church. Robert 'Bobby' Green resists this (Refusal). However, the change is forced upon him by his arrest and the subsequent attempted murder of Mark Wahlberg / Capt. Joseph 'Joe' Grusinsky.

The Road of Trial follows Robert 'Bobby' Green’s hising in the witness protection program and the Near Death Experience is the death of his real father, Robert Duvall / Deputy Chief Albert 'Bert' Grusinsky. It is following this that the New Self is born (Robert 'Bobby' Green) becomes a police officer and Eva Mendes (representing his Old Self) departs.

The final break from the Old Self (and conquest of it) is demonstrated by the murder of Marat Buzhayev’s nephew and his getting down on his knees at the request of Bobby, who is finally able to detach.
