ORDINARY WORLD CHARACTERS RESIST CHANGE

One aspect of the Hero's Ordinary World that is often missed is the fact that the characters and / or attachments within the Ordinary World are simply unable to see / experience what the Hero sees / experiences.

For example:

In the Harry Potter stories, the Dursleys often miss or cannot accept the potentially magical occurrences that they see.

In Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Ronnie is unable to see the UFO's and doesn't wish to – they conflict with her vision of the Ordinary World, which she cares to maintain.

The above is very often the trait of the interdictor – that archetype that doesn't wish the Hero to detach / escape from the Ordinary World and Ordinary Self.
