Beowulf (2007)

Beowulf (2007) is classic Hero’s Journey; the pattern is followed very closely; the Beowulf story is an example of the pattern.

This whole story is a metaphor for transformation and the becoming of a New Self, although in this case the Hero does not like what he becomes (“I died a long time ago). The further metaphor is the moral lesson: not to sell your soul (as Beowulf does to Angelina Jolie in return for her gifts of beauty and empire).

Elements include:

The requirement for a Hero is made explicit early on by Anthony Hopkins, after the failure of his defeat against his son, Grendel.

The Hero comes from a land or is an opposite from that which he will become and where he will become it (Beowulf is initially a Fish out of Water in Hrothgar’s kingdom).

The Hero’s extraordinary capacity for survival is demonstrated in the scene where he defeats the dragons during the swim.

The Hero is himself descended from a King (someone of superior ability) and is recognised as such by Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins).

Beowulf’s First Threshold is the King’s dining hall and the events that occur in it; the Shape Shifter is John Malkovich’s initially skeptical character, Unferth.

The Belly of the Whale in this story is Beowulf’s meeting with the Angelina Jolie, playing the character of Grendel’s mother.

The Road of Trials is Beowulf’s becoming the King and his subsequent conquests.

The Romantic Challenge here is Robin Wright Penn / Wealthow, who is rescued by Beowulf from his son, the Dragon (Seizing the Sword).
