American Gangster (2007) follows the pattern of the 188 stage Hero's Journey very closely.
Focusing on the little known aspect of detachment and attachment:
Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) is attached to the Ordinary World and Ordinary Self and this is symbolized by the attachment and presence of his partner Javier. Javier's death is symbolic of detachment from the Old World and Old Self and movement to a New World and New Self – which in this case is represented by the taking of the Blue Magic drug sachet.
The same detachment and attachment process is undergone by Denzel Washington's character, Frank Lucas. Initially, Frank is attached to his Ordinary Self and Ordinary World and this is represented by the supplicant behaviour (that is normal of a chauffeur) and deference to Bumpy Johnson. The movement to the New World and New Self is represented by the contact with his cousin and movement into the New World (the trip to Thailand to arrange heroine shipments and a new mentor – the Thai supplier).
There are two “Swords” in this story as there are two heroes. First, Richie's Sword is the discovery of Frank as a big time operator, following his wearing of the Chinchilla coat to the fight. Frank's Sword is the marriage to Eva.
Detachment, Attachment and Liberation Theory allows for the liberation stage, which is represented (for Frank Lucas) by his association and bringing into the fold his family members. Liberation is achieved when he is finally free of them, demonstrated by his standing alone when exiting the cell.
